This past Saturday, a handful of curious Torontonians and fellow LEAF volunteers embarked on a very sunny tree identification tour at the Don Valley Brick Works. Led by LEAF arborist Brenna Anstett, the group learned all about what differentiates trees from one another by observing and interacting with the natural environment.

When I was a child, my brothers and I collected nuts from any horsechestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum) we laid eyes on (until a squirrel chewed through the plastic garbage bin where we stored them and stole our stash…). My parents repeatedly told us, “NO, they are not the kind of chestnuts we can roast and eat.”

I’ve never been to Rio de Janeiro, but if I came across a genie in a bottle, visiting the city would be my first wish (I have dreams of strolling through Copacabana during Carnival). But much to my surprise, the city has more to offer than just beaches and hot weather. After a simple Google search, I learned that visiting Rio without seeing the Tijuca Forest is like going to New York City and not seeing Central Park.

As a tree of beauty and versatility, the basswood has played both a symbolic and practical role throughout history. It has been called by a number of different names over the years such as the mystical tree of life, the tree of health, the judicial tree, the victory tree, the fertility tree and the social/dance tree. Its most notable nickname, however, is the bee tree.
