Alien Invasion! How “Global Gardening” has impacted Toronto’s urban forest
(Toronto, ON – June 14, 2011) This Saturday, June 18, LEAF (Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests) will host a Tree Tour titled, Alien Invasion! How “Global Gardening” has impacted Toronto’s urban forest. The tour will run from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The meeting location is the southwest corner of Bloor St. and Parkside Ave., across from the Keele St. subway station. A $5.00 donation will be collected from each participant on the tour. Registration recommended (www.yourleaf.org).
Our expert tour leaders will be Paul Zammit, Director of Horticulture for the Toronto Botanical Garden and Colleen Cirillo of Toronto and Region Conservation and the Ontario Invasive Plant Council. They will reveal how many of Toronto’s most common trees and plants actually originate from abroad. While plants are neither inherently “good or bad”, they will discuss the impacts both native and non-native plants have on the urban forest and what that means for birds, bees, other pollinators and wildlife.
