(March 18, 2015 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) LEAF, the City of Toronto and partners have launched the Maple Leaf Forever Exhibition and Online Auction! Twelve unique designs, submitted through a competitive process and selected by a panel of judges, are being crafted by local designers using wood from the Maple Leaf Forever Tree. A portion of the proceeds for this project will support LEAF's urban forestry initiatives.
The tree, which grew in Leslieville and was felled during the 2013 summer storm, was the inspiration for the song ‘Maple Leaf Forever’ by Alexander Muir, written in 1867, the year of Confederation. “The Maple Leaf Forever Tree has been a symbol of Canadian patriotism all through its life”, says Janet McKay, Executive Director of LEAF. “This project helps preserve that historical value forever.”
This one silver maple tree is helping raise awareness of the beauty and character of urban wood. “Currently, most trees that come down in the city end up us as firewood or mulch”, adds McKay. But she says that there are much better ways to utilize urban wood. “The grains and patterns of urban wood are especially beautiful. Whenever possible, we should be capturing this resource and using it to make one-of-a-kind items infused with stories and meaning.” LEAF is supporting a growing ‘tree to table’ movement, reducing waste while stimulating the local economy.
The online auction website is now open for bids. It contains photos and descriptions of each item. All twelve pieces will also be exhibited at the Green Living Show, March 27-29, 2015. Bids can also be placed online at the show using an iPad that LEAF will have available at the exhibit. The auction closes at 5:00pm sharp on Sunday March 29, 2015 (the last day of the show).
Over the next two weeks, guest blogs from some of the designers will be shared in order to give more insight into their vision and craftsmanship that goes into their pieces. Bidders will be supporting LEAF and local designers, while also getting a piece of Canada’s history to cherish forever.
