April 25, 2023 – Newmarket residents who are looking to green their property can benefit from a Town of Newmarket partnership with the Regional Municipality of York that offers discounted trees through LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests).
With the LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Program, property owners can receive an additional $100 Newmarket Stormwater Management Rebate for planting a tree on their property through the Full Service or Do-It-Yourself program. Business properties do not apply, and there is a limit of one rebate per property per year, while supplies last.
Trees intercept, absorb and filter rainfall, which helps manage the amount of stormwater runoff entering our waterways. On average, a tree reduces a property's stormwater runoff by 720 litres. Every tree planted through this partnership will contribute to Newmarket’s urban forest and together have the potential to divert 36,000 litres of stormwater.
Residents can choose the Full Service Planting Program or the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Planting Program. Included in both options is a five-to-eight-foot-tall native deciduous tree or a two-to-four-foot-tall native evergreen tree, plus professional arborist advice to help them choose the right trees for their space and tree care instructions to help newly planted trees flourish.
The Full Service option offers an in-person arborist consultation and a full planting service from experienced LEAF staff all for just $160 to $230 (plus HST) per tree, before rebate. The DIY option offers a virtual consultation with an arborist, delivery to the participants property, and easy-to-follow planting guides for just $110 to $180 (plus HST) per tree, before rebate.
Apply to the Backyard Tree Planting Program, and you might be eligible to get a tree planted for as little as $10, courtesy of the Town of Newmarket’s Stormwater Management Rebate. Visit yourleaf.org or call 416-413-9244 to start.
QUOTES
“Trees are a great resource. Not only do they provide us with oxygen and add beauty to our town, but they are instrumental in making Newmarket more resilient to climate change and extreme weather. That’s why we’ve partnered with LEAF to provide the Stormwater Rebate Program to help residents plant trees.”
- Craig Schritt – Senior Climate Change Specialist, Town of Newmarket
“Trees provide so many benefits to property owners and the wider community, from stormwater management to summer cooling. LEAF plants native species, which are well-suited to our climatic conditions, typically require less maintenance than non-native species and provide essential habitat for wildlife. We’re excited to help Newmarket residents increase tree canopy and biodiversity right in their own yards.”
- Janet McKay, Executive Director, LEAF
