Did you know skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer? Despite this, rates of skin cancer are increasing in Canada. The biggest risk factor for developing skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun, and everyone, regardless of skin type, is at risk. There is a simple action we can take to reduce our risk.

What is the first thing you notice when you look at a tree? For me, it’s their strong trunks that extend into branches, from which beautiful canopies emerge. Aside from admiring their beauty and receiving their benefits, I realized I didn’t really know much about trees.

On Wednesday, June 8, LEAF and King Township were joined by 25 students from King City Secondary School at Cold Creek Conservation Area, where together we planted 150 native trees and shrubs.

June 3, 2016 marked the end of the spring contest in our Youth EAB Ambassador Program. Students from nine schools across York Region had been competing to get trees and shrubs planted in their communities in order to mitigate the effects of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer.

At the beginning of June, LEAF staff and volunteers gathered together to plant over 175 native perennials and grasses in street tree planters along the Danforth, where our Adopt-a-Street-Tree pilot project is already underway. All participants had a wonderful time, and the Danforth is looking better than ever.

On the morning of Saturday, June 4th, birds were singing, flowers were blooming, and our native bumble bees were busy foraging. It was also a perfect time to find LEAF’s Garden Stewards holding a bumble bee count in our Urban Forest Demonstration Gardens.
