Community Tree Plantings for Biodiversity in York and Durham Regions

This fall, LEAF staff and volunteers have begun planting native trees and shrubs in York Region as part of a larger, three-year project to increase biodiversity on public lands in York and Durham Regions. Among project activities are planting 6,000 native trees and shrubs, monitoring sites before and after planting and engaging local community members. These activities are made possible in part, thanks to support from Ontario Power Generation’s Regional Biodiversity Program.

Naturalizing Park Land in Richmond Hill

In this year alone, over 7,000 square meters of park land have been naturalized by Richmond Hill community members. Throughout the spring and fall of 2019, LEAF, the City of Richmond Hill and The Regional Municipality of York have hosted five planting events in Meander Park. With the help of 480 community members, we have planted 1,350 native shrubs and trees.

Native Plant Gardening Workshop at the LEAF Learning Garden

Armed with notebooks and pens, volunteer Garden Stewards gathered at the LEAF Learning Garden located at Wychwood Barns Park. Looking to add some tools to their planting knowledge arsenal, they were attending a native plant gardening workshop led by Ryan Godfrey, an environmental consultant, gardener and evolutionary biologist with over a decade of plant knowledge.

Planting Trees Grows Communities!

On April 27, 2019 the sky was overcast, the wind was relentless and the temperature was cold enough to require multiple layers of clothing to step outside! It did not seem like a good day to plant trees. Yet, in spite of the inclement weather, the Richmond Hill community came out to plant native trees and shrubs in Meander Park. In fact, this planting event was among our most popular – with roughly 200 participants and 400 trees and shrubs planted!

Learning a Sustainable Approach

This year marks 50 years of conservation, action and advocacy for the Ontario Urban Forest Council (OUFC). To celebrate, they organized a weekend of events dedicated to educating and inspiring those who care for the urban forest. The three-day festival included a gala, a tree tour of the Moore Ravine, and a full day seminar delivered by Dr. McKenzie-Mohr – an environmental psychologist and leader in promoting sustainable behaviour.
