Program provides subsidized trees and shrubs to help reduce energy use
(April 28, 2011, Kitchener and Guelph, ON – For immediate Release) LEAF - Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests will be officially launching its spring Cool Communities Residential Shade Tree Planting program this Friday, April 29 at Grand Valley Garden Village located at 3763 King Street East, Kitchener and on Saturday, April 30 at Royal City Nursery, 305 Woodlawn Road West in Guelph. A LEAF arborist will be on hand to answer questions about the program and provide advice about native trees and shrubs. They will be joined by Barkley, LEAF’s tree mascot.
The program, funded by the Ontario Power Authority, provides rebates of up to $100 per household on native trees and shrubs and is designed to aid homeowners in strategically planting trees and shrubs for shade and windbreak resulting in home energy conservation. The rebates are also available at Brock Road Nursery and runs until Sunday, June 5th.

“As strategically planted trees mature, they play an important role in reducing the need for heating and cooling thereby saving the homeowner money and helping the environment.” said Michelle Bourdeau, Manager, Residential Planting Program, LEAF. “By planting deciduous trees on the south and west sides of a house, homeowners can reduce air conditioning needs by up to 40% and evergreens planted on the north side act as windbreaks and can lower heating costs by up to 10%.”
Participants can visit the Cool Communities booth at participating nurseries to receive the rebates. The booth will provide customers with information on how to choose the best tree or shrub for the conditions of their property, the best planting locations and how to properly plant and care for trees and shrubs.
