What's up this Earth Day?

It's going to be a busy weekend. We get excited each year around this time as millions of people in over 175 countries around the globe get together to celebrate our home. This year we're spreading out to connect with diverse communities and share tips on stewarding the planet at a local level. And while Earth Day falls on Sunday, I wanted to share all of the weekend's events we'll be attending - I hope you can join us!

Seedy Saturday in Aurora

Kyle Ferguson, Manager of Marketing & Communications will be heading out to Seedy Saturday at the Aurora Cultural Centre (22 Church St., Aurora) on Saturday, April 21.  Seedy Saturdays are amazing ongoing events across the country that are designed for anyone and everyone interested in plant biodiversity, heritage gardening, organic gardening, and seeds and offers an opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals in your community.

Tree tour in Toronto

Mike Alkema, former LEAF Arborist and Field Supervisor will be at the Evergreen Brickworks on Saturday, April 21 as part of Evergreen's Earth Day Celebration to lead the Weston Quarry Garden Tree Tour where you can learn the importance of natural habitats in urban environments, tree identification and some of the natural history of this beautiful piece of Toronto's urban forest. Every year this event is a blast - be sure not to miss it!

Earth Day Planting

Tree planting in Markham

Next Kyle is heading up to Rouge Park in Markham to join 10,000 Trees for the Rouge in a tree planting event on Sunday, April 22. Over the past 23 years, this group has reclaimed over 164 acres of fragile watershed lands and planted over 161,000 trees. Join them as they work to help reforest the park and get some fresh air and exercise.  You'll meet other interesting groups active in the local area as they share tips on how you can get involved beyond this weekend. The planting site is at the entrance to Bob Hunter Memorial Park, on the south side of 14th Ave. at 7277 14th Ave. in Markham.

Cool Communities in Guelph

And finally, on Sunday staff arborist and Field Operations Supervisor, Andrea Bake and Melissa Williams, Manager of Residential Planting Programs, will head to Brock Road Nursery (1858 Gordon St. Guelph) to demonstrate proper tree planting and care and answer questions on getting native trees and shrubs in the right place. Join them and find out more about our Cool Communities Program which is also launching this weekend for residents in Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, and Guelph. In the neighbourhood? Find out more about this event and don't miss this opportunity to beautify your yard this Earth Day.

Personally, I'll be out in my backyard digging in my garden and caring for a few foster Bronte oaks, which are getting ready to be planted this spring. Sound busy? Let us know where you'll be!
